Men’s mental health is a topic that has gained a lot of attention in the recent years. Still many men struggle to address their mental health concerns. This is often due to Stigma and social expectations around masculinity. Traditional gender role expectations that men can not show emotions and be Vulnerable has put us into this situation. It is not important that every time men needs to be strong, sufficient and not show any signs of vulnerability.
Some common mental health disorders that affect men include depression, anxiety, post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder and addiction. Men may experience these disorders differently than women. Men may be more likely to experience anger and irritability instead of sadness or hopelessness. Furthermore because of this men are more likely to engage in risky behaviors, such as substance abuse and they are at higher risk for suicide .
Mental health professionals such as psychiatrist, psychologist, or a licensed therapist can provide a safe and confidential environment where men can talk about their problems and develop healthy coping mechanisms. We need to stop thinking that our symptoms are not severe enough to seek help.
We need to stop seeing mental health issue as a sign of weakness or failure. We need to tell the men of society that we are not ashamed of them if they are dealing with any kind of mental health issue. With right resources and support men can manage their mental health is a better way.
